Reading
A two storey extension and internal remodelling on a semi-detached house in Reading creates open plan living for a young couple.
Project Overview
Our brief was to turn this tired 1930s semi into a home that a young couple could be proud of. Despite initial opposition from the local authority, we were able to gain planning permission and detailed Building Regulation permission to help make our clients' dream home come to fruition.
THE SPACE
The original central kitchen was divided up to increase the width of the hallway and create a utility room and ground floor WC. The two storey side extension increased the area of the original living room to 49m2 and the kitchen was relocated into it. The newly created L shaped kitchen living area is now flooded with light due to tall patio doors that wrap around the patio and oversized picture windows that overlook the garden.
At first floor level a master bedroom with ensuite was added and we reconfigured the bathroom layout.

THE STYLE
Externally we specified red bricks and plain tiles to match the 1930s design of the house whilst respecting the shape of the original pair of semi-detached houses by setting the two storey side extension back so as to be subservient to the main house. Internally we created clean lines by positioning the structural beams within the depth of the floor, which allows a seamless transition between the new and old parts of the house.
