A Thoughtful Bungalow Extension in the South Downs National Park
We’re pleased to have just secured planning permission for the extension and conversion of a late-1970s bungalow on the edge of Droxford, Hampshire.
Starting with an unremarkable bungalow, our design introduces a new 68m² first floor formed within the existing and extended roof. This will create two generous bedrooms with accompanying bathrooms, linked by a new staircase and a double height galleried landing that brings light and a sense of arrival to the entrance hall.

On the ground floor, we have reimagined the layout to unlock the home’s full potential. The kitchen, dining and living areas will be opened up to form a spacious 50m² open-plan kitchen and living space, supported by a new utility room. Wraparound glazing will connect the interior with the garden, offering extensive views across the garden and surrounding countryside, making the most of the setting. The hallway will also be opened up to accommodate the new staircase and improve flow throughout the home.
Externally, the proposals include a series of modest yet impactful changes. A new open-plan porch will create a more welcoming entrance, while window openings will be increased in height and redesigned with traditional sash windows to give the bungalow a more traditional character.
Achieving planning permission in the countryside is rarely straightforward, and being within a national park adds an extra layer of complexity. However, our carefully considered and sensitive design approach helped pave the way for a smooth process and a positive, timely decision.
