Project Overview

We transformed an individual 1960s split level home through careful remodelling, a deep retrofit and sensitive contemporary design, preserving its original character while creating a home perfectly suited to modern coastal living.

Originally designed and built for a local builder in the 1960s, this individual house possessed all the ingredients to create something exceptional.

The original concept of the house, together with its prime position overlooking a tidal lake, gave our clients every reason to invest in its future. Their ambition was to improve its appearance, transform the internal layout and significantly enhance its environmental performance, creating a home ready for modern life.

THE SPACE

Working entirely within the existing footprint, we designed an external makeover and subtle internal reorganisation that complimented by a deep retrofit, builds on and emphasises the original concept of this split level 1960s home that sits on the bank of a of a tidal lake in Gosport.

Our design opened up the kitchen to the living room, added wider doors creating an 11m long open plan social kitchen with views that overlook the lake and the Spinnaker Tower beyond. The non-original porch was removed to be replaced by a simple in keeping open porch. A master suite with luxurious bathroom and dressing area was created from two bedrooms. The main bathroom is increased in size, while the split level staircase is updated and a glass floor added to the top landing.

THE STYLE

Our vision was to respect the character of the original Mid Century home while reimagining it for today. The low pitched roof, such a distinctive part of the home’s design, is celebrated by the use of oversized cantilevered eaves that give the impression of it floating above the wedge of vertical cladding below, bringing balance, elegance, and a sense of presence to the house.

Every detail reflects the remarkable craftsmanship and dedication of the owners, whose meticulous approach to construction has brought the design to life with exceptional quality.
