From three bedrooms to four: A carefully designed loft conversion
Creating a new master suite in a Hampshire semi-detached house
The loft conversion of a semi detached house in Gosport, Hampshire, which we designed this time last year, is now complete, and we have recently been back to see the finished result.

The house which is a typical 1930s semi-detached property, representative of the many similar homes found in towns and suburbs throughout the country. At first floor level, the original layout comprised of two double bedrooms, a smaller single bedroom and a family bathroom, arranged around the staircase and landing.
From the outset, we wanted to ensure that the conversion would not compromise the size of the original single bedroom to accommodate the new staircase leading to the second floor. We also wanted the completed work to look as though the loft conversion had always been part of the original house.
We first wrote about the benefits and considerations of loft conversions back in 2011 in our guide, An introduction to loft conversions. This project puts many of those principles into practice, demonstrating how careful design can make the most of the available space while respecting the character of the existing house.
Making the most of available space
To retain the size of the original bedroom, we redesigned the staircase from the ground floor to the first floor, allowing it to continue up to the new second floor. This approach made better use of the existing layout and avoided sacrificing valuable bedroom space.
The external design was equally important. We carefully positioned and proportioned the front dormer so that it aligned with the bay window below and sat comfortably within the roof space. By salvaging and reusing existing roof tiles, and incorporating a Barn End gable, we softened the appearance of the new work and helped it blend with the original house.
The front dormer required planning permission, and we prepared the necessary structural calculations for the new timber floor supporting the additional accommodation.
A new master suite
The result is a four-bedroom home with a new master bedroom, dressing room and ensuite shower room, providing the owners with a substantial improvement to their living space without the need to move house.

One particularly lovely detail is the window seat, with storage beneath, introduced by our client into the front bay window. It has created an inviting place to sit and read while enjoying an elevated view across the rooftops towards the Spinnaker Tower.

It's a reminder that the success of a project is not measured solely by the additional floor area. The smaller details can be just as important in making a house feel like home.

More than just extra space
A successful loft conversion is about more than adding another bedroom. It is about understanding how a house works, making the best use of the space available and creating rooms that improve the way people live.
This Gosport project demonstrates how careful planning and good design can transform a home from within, while allowing the exterior to retain the character of the original property.
At Space and Style, we believe that the best loft conversions do more than create additional accommodation. They create space that feels as though it has always belonged.
